The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest reef system. It is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia. The reef is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometers over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometers. This huge area can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms.
The reef supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981. There are more than 1500 fish species living on the reef, 400 coral species and 215 bird species. Lizard Island is located right in the middle of it all, allowing you to explore the reef in style. It is no surprise that our Great Barrier Reef island is surrounded by some of the best scuba diving on the planet.
