Established in 1989, Rovos Rail is equally synonymous with world-class travel experiences. The company’s fleet of trains – which may be hauled by steam, diesel or electric locomotives at various stages of the journey – carry a maximum of 72 passengers in 36 superbly appointed suites. Indeed, they rank amongst the most spacious train suites in the world, each one recapturing the romance of a bygone era with wood panelling and Edwardian features, yet also equipped with modern comforts like ensuite bathrooms, bar fridges and 24-hour room service. Exquisite pillared dining cars are also a signature of the Rovos Rail trains, their period décor, fine china and crisp linens ensuring an elegant evening mood that is also reflected in the cuisine – the accent is on fresh local ingredients with much emphasis upon game. Yet daytimes are delightfully relaxed, passengers usually quite content to sit on one of the open-air balconies of the Observation Car and marvel at the splendid South African scenery.
